IKEA Hack Craft Pod

The original idea came from Martha Stewart via apartment therapy, only hers is much posher obviously
I used two Billy bookcases, a piano hinge, two hinges for the sewing machine fold out shelf and 8 wheels also from Ikea.
Pretty cool huh?

  • Thanks for the great idea!

  • Great job ….. love the idea.

  • Caitlin @ Clutter Cubed

    Very nice!!

Though chains at the sides to help hold up the sewing shelf might be a good idea for the future (like those on a writing desk or wine cabinet).

  • This is a really fabulous idea! Nice work. I saw you on Ikea Hacker.

  • I found this on the IKEA Hacker, and I think it's fabulous! I'm all inspired to make my own now, great work :-)

  • This is freakin' BRILLIANT!
Thanks so much for sharing it! XXxx

  • brilliant,useful,cheap
    my three favorite attributes
    I am totally doing this
    thanks

  • thanks so much to all of you for the comments!! :)

  • Love it, what are you using as the backing board? It doesn't look like the standard billy slide in back board?

  • Elizabeth Rosenberg

Good work! Great idea, and very inspirational!

  • hi Graig, actually now that you mention it, I looked a bit on the Ikea website and it turns out I used the FLÄRKE bookcase instead of the Billy, It seems that it's not available in the US or so it seems…anyway the backing is this really cheap white bendy paper/plastic. I'm thinking of getting some wood cut to put over it though as it's not very durable…

  • hey lizzie great idea – my sewing machine wants to hide away in that too! I love the way you used the shelf to create the double surface for the sewing machine to come out when it's time to sew-sew-sew!! very practical!!
    go girl!!

  • completely brilliant! I have been wanting a rollaway storage system that could serve as a children’s blackboard/cork board for homeschooling by day (like the backside of your shelves), and mama’s craft room by evening. You have just solved my problem, so I love you forever. May Santa bring you extra crafting supplies this year.

  • By the way, how much weight are the wheels supposed to carry, according to their packaging? I’m just wondering if your shelves might one day suddenly break on you — I’ve seen that happen.

At any rate, I’m already happily picturing two sets of your brilliant idea side by side in our tiny school room . . . opening up for a whole wall of crafting bliss. Thank you!

  • I think the wheels hold 25kg per set so 50 in total, which is quite a lot. The only really heavy things in the cabinet are the serger and sewing machine. I’d love to see how yours looks, send me a pick when you make it! and thanks for the comments :)

  • hmmm my husband is going to build a pantry inside of a closet in the hallway, i would love to have a part that would slide out with some spaces for cans and spices etc…. i wonder if he could include something like this into his ideas…. would be a nice pantry in itself actually if your tight on space like i am. great idea tks!

  • I’d say that’s very cool! I’m always looking for space saving ideas like this, thank you!

  • Hi there may I use some of the information here in this post if I provide a link back to your site?
